Indian Astrology

The technique and methods used to determine the positioning of planets and their consequent effect gives rise to different systems. Astrological sages in India offered an innovative solution to this complex problem of movement of different bodies and the moving frame of reference by defining a Fixed Zodiac. This system is called “Nirayana or Indian System”. In the Nirayana system, the Zodiac or celestial circle is assumed to be a fixed one. The Indian system uses mathematical models and makes it possible to calculate, analyze and interpret to the desired level of accuracy progressively.

Western Astrology

The Western or Sayana or Moving zodiac system makes calculations and predictions based on the so-called present position of the stellar system. This has limitations as in the present scientific world, there is no way of defining the current position of ever moving celestial body zodiac.
The difference between Sayana longitudes and Nirayana longitudes of planets is called “Ayanamsa” or precision. Sayana system is at best a crude first order approximation. Nirayana system is an innovative solution to a complex situation.
The Sayana system uses techniques of approximation and progressive accuracy in predictions is not possible.

Difference between Indian Astrology and Western Astrology

In certain other aspects they differ from each other. For example the square opposition aspects are bad and trine and sextile aspects are always good in Western Astrology. Where as in the Hindu system good and bad aspects are not based on the types of aspects, but by the nature of the planets involved in the aspects. Ashtakavarga system, Shadvarga charts, Shadbala assessment and Yogavali are not found in the Western System.
The Indian Science of Astrology also gives certain remedial measures to overcome mental, moral and physical sufferings by means of medicinal roots, mantras and yoga practices and Gemstones. Though Hindu Astrology deals with all the aspects of human life indicating materialistic success and failures, it is deeply rooted in philosophy.
As i said in the beginning the very purpose of Astrology is to alert an individual about on coming events whether good or bad, provide insight into the behaviour of the members of the society and like a psychiatrist, provide counselling for the needy.(we will meet again)

Common features of Indian and Western Astrology

When we compare the Indian Astrology with that of the Western Astrology there are certain general principles found in both the systems. Ownership of houses, exaltation, debilitation, characteristics of planets and the 12 aspects of human life are the same.

What is Nadi Jothidam ?

Nadi Jothidam is the name of an ‘exact science’ by which all details about a person can be told by consulting palm-leaf inscriptions attributed to Agastya Muni, a very famous ancient sage from the South. There is, supposedly, one palm-leaf inscription for every human on this earth, past present and future! Taking into account population explosion, the whole place should be chock full of palm leaves, but miraculously this is not so. This could mean two things- either the ancients had the foresight to know as to who would visit the place and hence only the bio-data of those visitors would be available,or the leaves are preserved in some format wherein terabytes of data could be compressed and stored. The prints would be taken after the candidate arrives on the spot!

What is Astrology?

Astronomy is the science that deals with the physical phenomena of heavenly bodies, their constitution, motion, attraction and the resultant manifestations which are perceptible to the physical eyes directly or through gadgets eclipse, the new moon, full moon etc., are cases in point while telescopes are used to determine the positions of Mars and Mercury, for example. This is acceptable to the modern minds.
Astrology however deals with the influence of those heavenly bodies like planets and stars on human life and connected affairs. Though a raging controversy has been going on for some time whether Astrology is a science or not, it is a fact that it is a science in one sense that its whole edifice is built on scientific data. It is an art in the sense that man interprets the influence of these bodies on human life. It is a much debated question whether these bodies have any influence at all on us, while the controversy goes on, with either side not relenting. I can only say that judging from the recorded facts of events and experiences of many learned men we can conclude that these heavenly bodies do exert some influence on earth and the life on earth.
It also helps to know and infer on the nature of the past as well as the future. It is a tool for us mortals to be guided by such indications for a better adjustment of our lives. We generally believe that the laws of Fate and ways of God are inscrutable, no matter what advances we make in the realm of science. This no longer appeals to the scientific mind as science has helped us to see through the mystery veil but not completely or with any finality.
The human mind which is constantly in quest of mysteries of the Universe, is also concerned about its own welfare and hence seeks to get some answers. Astrology serves this purpose. It is as popular in the west as it is in the east.

What is Tamil Panjangam?

Tamil Panchangam is a spiritual and scientific Hindu calendar. It is an ancient art of Vedic astrology that helps to maintain the best days and time to come. Tamil Panchangam has been derived from two words Panch(meaning 5) and ang(meaning aspect). The Tamil Panchangam measures time in lunar months whose names reveal the secret path of stars and constellations. It lists four weeks of seven days, identified with planets and gods. This therefore takes into account five aspects – Din(Vara) or the solar day, Tithi or the lunar day, Nakshatra or the constellation, Yoga and Karan.

It is far more accurate than conventional horoscopes and has loads of empowering practical uses like telling you the best days and times for travel, love, parties, moving, interviews, investments dental visits & lot. To find the auspicious time to start anything new it considers the week day of week (Vara), Tithi, Nakshatra(Star), Yogam of the day, Karana of the day, and the ending moments of all these to determine whether the day is Amurtha, Siddha and Shubha. The Tamil Panchangam is always used as the spiritual expression of time for Hindus and a guide to a life close to God and religion.

Although it is essential to have the knowledge of arithmetical calculations to understand Indian Astrology, but for the benefit of the common people, astrologers have devised a calendar (Panchang) with the help of which, and simple arithmetical calculations, one can have knowledge about planets, good or bad for him.
It is not necessary for a common man to be an astrologer in order to understand the Tamil Panchangam. But for a smooth and systematic running of life, one should know how to interpret ‘Phalita’.

Tamil Panchangam means five organs to understand the Phalita. These five things are

Tithi (Date)
Nakshatra (Group of stars)
Yoga (an auspicious moment)
Karan (Half of the part of Tithi)
Vaar (days of the week)

In the Hindu method of calculations, although the 365 ¼ days of the revolutions of the earth round the sun are recognised, the calculations are done according to the revolution of the moon round the earth, which falls short by approximately 7 days during one year, when compared to calculations done according to the solar calendar.

The Tamil panchangam, based on the lunar calendar, which also has 12 months in a year comes level with the “Ayanas” or sun calculation by adding a month ( known as Loonth or Purshottam Maas) after every three years.

The time between two consecutive risings of the sun is the day, the Solar day or Din.( according to the Gregorian calendar the day begins at 12.00 P.M.) , according to the Indian calendar the time between two consecutive risings of the moon is taken as LunarDay or Tithi.

The panchang measures time in lunar months whose names reveal the secret path of stars and constellations. The face of the new moon is called Amavasya and it ushers in the new month. The first fortnight of the full moon is known as Shuklapaksha “the bright half” as the moon waxes; while the dark half fortnight of the month is called Krishnapaksha during which the moon wanes.

What is horoscope?

Horoscope is simply a map that appears as a two dimensional chart. It shows the position of the Sun, the Moon, and planets at the precise moment of your birth. The planets are frozen in their position at that initial moment of birth. That is why this type of horoscope is known as the birth chart or the natal chart. A correct interpretation of these birth positions exposes much about you. It can be thought of as the “hand” that has been “dealt” in life. This doesn’t suggest that your life has already been decided. A horoscope can never show how you are going to “play” this hand. It’s largely up to you to decide that. While you usually have freedom of choice or free will, the horoscope does reflect the natural inclinations you have, the lessons you have to learn, the issues to be faced, and the problems to be solved. It may be thought of as merely an abstract formula showing the energies you’ve been given, or perhaps tasked. The use that you make of these energies, or opportunities, if you will, depends upon you, the individual. Astrology can provide incredible keys to understanding, but it doesn’t necessarily provide clear and simplistic answers to any problems with which you may be dealing. Obtaining information about your horoscope may give you some insights and understanding of the reasons why you behave as you do.

To have the horoscope of another revealed allows the reader to understand that person better. You can see and understand him or her more accurately, objectively, and with a much greater tolerance. Understanding your horoscope may allow you to more clearly understand and accept yourself, and therefore do what you can with your natural attributes.
